This was the kind of episode that sets up greatness. I can’t wait to see what happens next. If the “question mark” was the central hub, where is the message tube leading to? And why would Locke put his map in there? It was nice to see Claire in the upcoming episode preview. They keep killing off the hot chicks.
Very interesting episode of LOST. It remains to be seen, but for some reason Locke and Eko are tied together in some mystic way. They both share a vision of Eko’s dead brother and they are “guided†to a mysterious Pearl hatch where they find an observation room that monitors the other hatches. So now Locke and Eko both know about the other hatches and that they are able to be monitored. Interestingly enough, the Swan hatch that the “Losties†are in has electro-magnetic forces. When they showed Desmond in the begining of the season he had an elaborate mirror/telescope system for surveilance. I thought that this was a result of a conventional CCTV camera not being able to work because of the electro-magnetic interference. Obviously this is not true because there were cameras in the Swan hatch that Locke and Eko could watch. I was waiting for Locke and Eko to find a vcr/dvr in the hatch that showed Michael shooting both Ana Lucia and Libby. It sets up for a good ending to the season.
Did anyone else happen to notice that Dr. Marvin Candle used a different name in the video for the Pearl Hatch?

See the look on michaels face when he finds that libby is still hanging on to her life. I was half expecting him to try and kill her again (while no one was looking)
I guess the episode explained a few things, eg. punching in the numbers is just an experiment to ‘see if they would’. (like jack once said to locke i bellieve).
but many more question like….
where is the person that is meant to be in the pearl hatch?
where does the tube go to (must be on the island still)?
why did no other cameras/display in teh pearl work (are all the other hatches gone)?
i was hoping to get some insight into why michael felt nessacary to kill and let henry gale free? has he been brain washed? is he now a spy for the others? did they use walt as leverage for him to do it?
so many questions, but hell thats lost for ya.

Yeah, I noticed that the orientation was a tape and not on film.. kind of weird, assuming that they were made at the same time, hypothetically
I think this was an amazing episode…. im guessing sometime, maybe next season or on the finale if they find the “other’s” camp, we’ll find where locke’s drawing went.
And did anyone get a look at that printout? that was a lot of numbers being accepted… and i meant a LOT… but why was it left to print out the log?
And if you’re leaving a hatch, why do you leave a TV on? just wondering… haha

what if…and i might be wrong… the people that are really subjects of the ‘experiment’ are those in the control room..
the people in the other hatches are actually just going about their business saving the world….
Just wondering what everyone thinks of what appeared to be heroine, sand and cigarettes in the pearl hatch. Could this a connection?

Here’s an interesting thing I noticed, and I can’t quite figure out exactly how to interpret this.. but if you look at the numbers that were printed out from the log file of the computer in the Pearl Hatch, it has what appear to be times followed by [accepted]. For instnace:
0416002058:41 [ Accepted ]
These could be the times that the button was pushed, in hours.. because the difference between any two references are 1:48 (108 minutes).
What’s strange, though, is that if this is in fact hours — it translates into 70+ years that this has been going on.. There’s probably much more to it than that, but I wanted to bring it up for discussion.

I don’t recall anyone bringing up that Locke put the map he made into one of the pneumatic tubes and sent it off. Kinda like he knew it would be sucked along.

I’ve heard people saying that Marvin Candle goes by the new name Dr. Whitman in the new orientation film for the Pearl. I though he said “Wickman” to go along with the whole candle theme. Waxman (call sheet), Candle, Wickman. I’m pretty sure it’s Wickman, that make sense.

Hmmm maybe not….he doesn’t have the prosthetic hand in this film….but both were copyrighted in 1980 so unless the swan station film was recorded after and he lost his hand…but seems unlikely as he refers to the psych experiment in pearl….

The name used by Dr. Candle in this episode was in fact Wickman. That’s what came up on the closed captions.
I really thought it was a cheap episode. Echo’s dream sequences were just a little too far fetched as plot ploys. But I was very sad about the ending, poor Hurley! Found myself crying with Kate.
I think you’re right. The numbers in the printout do equal times and it has been going on for 70+ years. Remember, the longevity study and Joop? I also think that the study relates to why Locke can now walk. Whatever it was that causes longevity also heals.
Also I think the last episode leads to the crash all being a set up. Remember, the pyschic said he was a fraud? I think the honso foundation preselected those to be on the plane and Claire was one of the selected which was why the phony psychic sent her on the plane. He was paid to.
Hmmm…. great episode. Why is Eko persuading John to push the button? Does he know something we don’t know yet? So the people in the Pearl Hatch observed the people in the Swan Hatch, pressing the button every 108 minutes, believing their work was important.
But what if the watchers are the watched?
Something tells me that there has been sabotage and attempts to debunk these experiments in the past – the piece of instructional film from the Swan Hatch might have been taken to the Arrow Hatch to show the people in the Swan Hatch that there is ANOTHER instructional film out there using the same guy as in their film (yes, I think the Candle/Wickman guy probably did ALL the instructional films for all the hatches). I think that it provides some clue as to why the Arrow’s blast doors were dropped for good.
Why only take out part of the film? So the people in the Swan Hatch wouldn’t notice the film missing, perhaps.

You know…I still have a feeling that there’s really more going on in the Swan Hatch than just pushing in numbers as a psychological experiment to be watched by those in the Pearl Hatch. I just can’t shake it!
I’m going to snap!!! I’m watching from eastern Canada & ABC must have screwed something up because the last sceen cut out Wednesday night! Does anybody have the last couple of minutes (maybe just seconds) on their computer? It cut out when Eko & Locke were walking back to the Swan through the tall grass.Can anybody help?!!??!?!

It did not seem as though John and Eko walked far enough to have reached the central question mark. I have a copy of the map from Entertainment Weekly who published it a few weeks ago, and there is a second question mark that is closer to the swan station…I think this is the question mark that this episode addressed.
So here are a couple things I noticed….
When it comes to the print-out numbers (as mentioned earlier)….the numbers are up around 41602068….but that’s before Locke prints out the full 40 sheets….
But looking at the numbers….they appear to be in minutes not hours….(68)and they are incrementally increasing…
Which might imply that perhaps the project started at 0:00. If that’s the case then the project would have been running for about 79 years.
The other thing I noticed…is that at the end of the episode when Michael is standing in the gun locker….he is looking down into the corner. Anna Lucia’s body isn’t on the bed (like it was earlier when Echo was praying for her)….but instead…there is a brief glimpse at the end of the shot of something that looks like a head of someone crouching down in the corner behind the bed.

Love the podcast. Always get great info from it…
The orientation tape in “?” was on “three-quarter-inch” tape, a standard broadcast quality tape used in the 80’s (you can still find them hanging around TV stations, although Beta replaced 3/4″ tape in the video industry in the 90’s). It’s larger and bulkier than VHS or Beta.
The audio recording of the autopsy was just about the creepiest thing I’ve ever seen/heard on TV…

According to the closed captioning, Marvin Candle’s other name is “Mark Wickmund.” The candle theme still works. We’ll have to see if he shows up in the next orientation film as Professor Mario Paraffino.

just a thing on the lost experience, i was looking at a popular blink-182 fansite, and it looks like they are affiliated with the hanso foudation…either that or the creator of the website is a lost fan…check it out http://www.b182.com

has anyone read the BAD TWIN book? on the Lost Experience wiki it mentions an address for the hanso foundation and widmore being in New York City. Does anyone have that actual address – I want to go take a peek… (I work in NYC)
Is anyone having any issues with the pick-tures (as Jay calls them) showing up in this latest AAC podcast? I thought it was my iPod, but it’s happening on my iTunes as well. :'(
If you hear the shutter noise they should be there, I forgot to put the pics for the Lost Experience in it, but besides that there is tons of pics in the recap.
Make sure you have enabled the album artwork to show, that seems to be a problem from time to time

i thought that “Candle” said that his name was “Whickman” as in a candle whick. the ? in the dream was due to the fact that your brain cannot make out numbers or letters in a dream.
Jack folks should question why Libby would choose to say “Michael” as her last word over anything else. If she really cared about someones fate, wouldn’t she have said “Ana” instead of “Michael”, she was much closer to Ana Lucia, right?
Also, just hoping poor Hurley doesn’t get more depressed thinking that his bad luck has followed him to the island, making him responsible for Libby’s death, it kinda sounded like he is blaming himself since he forgot the blankets….

Did anyone else notice the laughter in the background when Eko was listening to the autopsy tape? It’s right before the screaming starts. Eko hears it and gives the coroner a look. How come no one has mentioned this?

Hey guys; I love your ‘cast! One of the first things I do after the show airs is dl your show for my morning commute. Keep it up! One comment – could you hit the mute button when taking screenshots? That camera shutter noise is very distracting (a nice acknowledgement that you’re Mac users, though -yay!). Otherwise, no complaints; you’re one of my favorite podcasts!
Well we do that so people know when there is a pic on thier iPods and iTunes. I know it doesn’t make much since on your drivetime commute but that was our response to people wanting to know when there is a new pic. Plus thats helps me so I don’t have to say hey heres a pic 😉

Hand – no hand. Could it be that the good doctor lost his hand in the “incident”. I don’t believe that anything in the film/video shows which came first. Dharma could have used film to keep from having to maintain a TV in the hatch, or deal with issues from the magnets.
The second the tape started playing I knew I had heard the name “The Pear” before. If you notice, it’s on the blast door map on the right side. Who wrote it – how did they know – who’s running this place (sorry, had to).

No please keep the shutter noise thing. I listen to your show all week when i’m going to class on the subway (NYC) and I need that to see when there is a pic. Its very usefull and a great idea.
Another strange telling look… The look that Libby gave to the girl in the airport when she asked if everything was alright. That also looked like she knew something was going on.
henry gale said once, “our leader is a great great man”. maybe the leader of the others killed wickman/candle man? or he could even BE the leader of the others!
i thought it was quite interesting that most of the screens didnt work in the pearl. why is this? it definitely means that the others have set up camp around one of the hatches. with eko on the case now, we will find the hatches quicker, with more tapes and clues. BUT, the map has been sucked up somewhere. but locke didnt have much belief at that point.
but with the new finding, maybe sayeed could do something with the newly found computer and re-jig something? the pearl seems pointless “hey, guys, just watch stuff, and write it down”
felt bad for hurley, imagine what he’s gonna do to michael when he finds out he shot her. i dont think michael has the ability to keep calm after this event. sayeed will quiz him.

I had the same problems as !!blue did with the pictures. They were there in the small preview form, but when I try to “enlarge it” the pictures were blank… haven’t tried it on itunes though, since I listen to the podcast on my subway commute (ipod)
