Lost Podcast (AAC): Ep. 1.16 “The Long Con”
On this thursday edition of the Lost Podcast With Jay and Jack. Jay and Jack recap and discuss the latest episode “The Long Con.” They take a look at some “LOST” news, they get into some Listener Feedback, and Jack presents what may be his worst crackpot theory to date.
go sawyer go!
I told ya Locke wasn’t evil.
I liked the twist in this episode…
Sawyer (James) has cemented himself as my favorite character.
It’s great when they surprise you. We’re all watching Locke versus Jack, and suddenly a new challenger emerges. Even the end of Sawyer’s flashback defied expectations. Take this episode and the last one (“Fire + Water”), and it’s clear things are turning dark, fast, and that there’s a distinct new direction ahead for this season.
I did think some of the motives and actions were a bit hazy, especially given that they involved characters we think we know relatively well. Locke’s “drug” line implies he’s up to something, but his befuddlement at Sawyer’s cage rattling also says he’s unsteady, unsure. And just why would Charlie agree to Sawyer’s scheme, especially since it seems Sawyer misjudged his motives? Sure, he’s got nothing left to lose, but the line from “humiliate Locke” to “attack Sun the day after everyone things I tried to drown a baby” is a shaky one to me.
I was a bit disappointed that I was able to guess what Sawyer was up to before it was explained. As soon as he explained to his girl what the long con was…about making the mark think it was their idea…I knew she would fall for it…and as soon as he went to the hatch to talk to Locke, I knew Locke would fall for that. The surprise was how lame that whole con turned out to be…just to gain the “gun advantage” which, in my opinion, will not turn out well for him and quickly.
I do confess to being surprised by Charlie and a bit impressed…after the last episode I was a little pleased to see Locke get a small degree comeuppance.
Yea I must say that “The Lord of the Flies” rule is starting to come into play. I guess we will have to see as the upcoming episodes are aired.
Jay
Just a thought for a new song – to “Janie’s Got a Gun”
Sawyer’s got the guns,
Sawyer’s got the guns,
Jack’s world’s come undone,
Sawyer’s got the guns.
And what did Charlie do?
Slapped Locke with an IOU
And Kate was so confused,
Is Jack hittin’ Annie-loooo.
Just a thought.
OOO very nice, I may just make that a song.
Good job Uncle Igmar
Back to the Future is my favorite movie of all time! I’m starting to feel like a dork for posting this on all my favorite Lost sites, but I can’t let a reference go unnoticed!!
Jack, I totally agree with your theory of it all being a Dharma experiment. I was actually arguing that theory at our weekly Lost party this week. It just makes sense. Plus, it’s super nerdom for sci-fi geeks like me.
Uncle Igmar, great song man!! I’ll probably be singing it the rest of the day. HAHA.
Hey guys this podcast is fantastic and i happen to love it, anyways who thought that this was the best episode of the second season? if you do then youll be sitting next to me because thats were i am
Hey Jack i hope that your theory is incorrect because there will be so many holes in the story and that would be a huge threat. And for everyone that thinks the flashbacks are dharma videos: i think that is hoshposh! they are moments from that persons life that either explain their actions on the island, help predict how they will react to certain situations, and foils with their life now on the island. In fact i think its a safe to say that my favorite part of LOST is the fact that their flashbacks are a parrallel to their current lives on the island….what ya think about that
hey Jay and Jack!
i have a whopper of a theory to tell you guys. i will call it in!
you will never believe what i have in store for you two. Jack’s head is gonna spin so hard, due to the fact that his mind will be blown!
I haven`t listened to the podcast yet but i`m looking forward to it. I thought the episode was very interesting and gave us all a kick up the arse on our thoughts on Sawyer.
I wonder, could it be that Sawyer was referring to Cassidy when he was hallucinating in the hatch and not Kate. That explains his reaction to Jack’s comment in the hunting party, about him being in love with Kate that is!
ooh, good call.
Ye Reem thats what a lot of people were thinking, but i dont think its logical because it turns out that he didnt really love her and everything that happened was supposed to happen
Sawyer might have loved her but he is maybe incapable to have the strength to actually do something good, it could be what eases his pain, (conning others) but it actually ends up causing more pain until he runs another con, and so on and so on it goes.
This had NOTHING to do with what Sawyer felt for Cassidy – when he was in the bunk bed in the bunker – Kate’s desperate need for forgiveness was channeled into the island’s ability to physically manifest what is LOSTIES most need – or want. He was speaking as Dwayne – not himself – call it possession – call it what you will – but that’s my theory and I am sticking to it – so there.
Has anyone found a website for the construction company listed in “Fire + Water”? I was wondering if one had shown up yet.
My crack pot theory: Maybe this is not all a big Dharma experiment, but a huge television or movie reality type show. I’m thinking of it being a huge Survivor type series, but on steroids. We will be surpried one day when the shot pans back to see people watching the “LOST” series on TV.
I know it is lame, but I thought of it as Jack rattled off his theory this week.
Thanks for a great site and podcast. π
I’m totally into that theory of Dharma being behind everything, and there have been a few clues scattered around the flashbacks that suggest this such as the same car being used in accidents (don’t think it’s been seen so far this season though) and the character crossovers that are far too many now to be coincidential. They are behind everything from Hurley’s house burning to Sarah being able to walk again. They’ve all had their lives manipulated since Dharma and the Hanso Foundation began (sometime in the ’70s?) culminating in staged events that led them boarding Flight 815. Except Hurley who they didn’t want on the plane, probably because he already knew about the numbers.
This podcast wasn’t updated on ITUNES, are ya’ll not going to publish them? Just curious, was dying without my Jay and Jack fix…
Not really, but I was kinda missing it. ;-p
Audioblog has taken our mp3 feed hostage. the AAC is functional, and you can get our mp3 show through the backup feed at

Once again, when will Audioblog stop their evil communist conspiracy against Jay and Jack?
BTW, Jay and Jack, I sent in a new theory to you guys. Its got some pretty wild and slightly disturbing ideas in it, but I think its got at least some truth to it, and I hope you guys think so too…even though it is a little off the wall, I admit.
checked out Big spaceship 1 , today. and there is odd things going on there!
could this be a educatoinal tool for designing a new “bunker”?
